The PEN Club in the Publications of the Čapek Brothers’ Society
Abstract:
The materials printed by the Čapek Brothers’ Society (Zprávy Společnosti bratří
Čapků [Reports of the Čapek Brothers’ Society], Zpravodaj Společnosti bratří
Čapků [Bulletin of the Čapek Brothers’ Society], Acta Čapkiana) repeatedly reflected
the activity of the Czechoslovak PEN Club and both its contemporary and
historical ties to the figure of Karel Čapek. The contributions published can be
thematically divided between academic studies and informational pieces, which
focused on the awarding of the PEN Club Prizes, introduced the authors to whom
they were awarded and their relationship to Čapek, reviewed the conferences
and discussion groups organized by PEN, and included photographic reportages
from important events documenting the active role of the club in Czech literary
life. In addition, mentions of PEN’s activities in the context of cultural and literary
events were published there. The academic papers concentrated on Čapek’s
work in the PEN International, his effort to connect Czech literature to the world
context, and analyses of his concepts of freedom of speech and humanism as
related to the PEN Club’s values. Other studies are focused on historical analyses
of the importance of PEN in interwar Czechoslovakia and its relationship to
Čapek’s legacy. The contributions in the Čapek Brothers’ Society publications,
therefore, provide a valuable overview of the longstanding connection between
the PEN Club and the society, both through historical studies and contemporary
reports on its activity.
