“Dear Mrs. B.” Selected Correspondence of Bohuslava Růžena Bradbrook and Otakar
Vočadlo
Abstract:
The selected correspondence of Bohuslava Růžena Bradbrook (née Nečasová) reveals
her contact with the eminent Anglicist Otakar Vočadlo. The correspondence ranges
from 1956 to 1974. The everyday worries of both correspondents are reflected there.
After leaving Czechoslovakia, Nečasová had to struggle with living in refugee camps
and the complex process of seeking asylum, first in Ireland and then in Great Briain
where, after successfully completing her studies, she established herself at Bangor
University. Vočadlo, although he was a world-famous Anglicist with many contacts
(or perhaps precisely because of that), had to face political pressure after February
1948, which meant his departure from the university. In their correspondence,
however, what is represented most significantly is the subject of literary research
and scholarship on the life and work of Karel Čapek. This is a theme to which both
correspondents dedicated their entire lives, which in Vočadlo’s case also involved his
personal friendship with Čapek. The correspondence shows what the opportunities
for and state of research were in Czechoslovakia and Great Britain at the time, while
also offering insights into the context of politics and society in both places.
