The Correspondence of Julius Firt and Pavel Tigrid during the Second Exile, 1949–1978
Abstract:
This collection of the edited letters of Julius Firt and Pavel Tigrid between 1949 and 1978 is a valuable source material for the history of Czechoslovaks in exile after the 1948 coup and the still little-known life of significant Czech cultural figures in exile. The letters were selected from the recently-catalogued collection of Julius Firt which is preserved at the Literary Archive of the Museum of Czech Literature. The discovery of these writings in Firt’s estate and the cataloguing of the collection of his personal correspondence deposited at the Museum of Czech Literature will make it possible in future for Firt as a public figure and his significance to Czech culture and the Czech state to be remembered with greater dignity. The correspondence exemplifies the intermingling of culture, literature and politics in the complex diasporic environment of those dispersed in exile. Firt, a politician and publisher, contributed to organizing the exile of politicians and to building Radio Free Europe (RFE) after the coup in February 1948, also dedicating himself to literary work. Tigrid took advantage of his wartime experiences as a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) staffer when building RFE and subsequently when publishing and spreading uncensored journalism into Czechoslovakia.
