Yevhen Malaniuk – Correspondence with Josef Svatopluk Machar, 1930–1937
Abstract:
This auxiliary study is accompanying the edited letters of Yevhen Malaniuk to Josef Svatopluk Machar which are preserved at the Literary Archive of the Museum of Czech Literature. The contact between Machar and Malaniuk is usually seen not just as an unprecedented example of intense intellectual exchange between these leading representatives of Czech literature and Ukrainian literature in the interwar period, but also as a unique example of the successful integration of a Ukrainian émigré into the Czech cultural environment of the time, which he served through his awareness-raising and translation in particular. The study works with this source material, offers the necessary cultural, historical and literary context, and provides suggestions for future research. It also offers an attempt at comparing these authors and their positions in Czech and Ukrainian literature and traces the similarities in the creative output and lives of Machar and Malaniuk, finding remarkable parallels.
