The Figuration of the “Third” in Jaroslav Rudiš’s Winterberg’s Last Trip
Abstract:
The novel Winterberg’s Last Trip by the established Czech author Jaroslav Rudiš was written in German and published in 2019 (translation into Czech in 2021), and the author explained paratextually that German is neither his mother tongue nor a foreign language to him. This disruption of traditional opposition is one of the novel’s fundamental tendencies: It represents a performative criticism of thinking in binary oppositions and relies on numerous figurations of “the third” as a dynamic negotiation of meanings between categories such as own and other, past and present, verse and prose. The study analyses seven figurations of “the third” in this novel, which are of a linguistic, temporal, spatial, metaphysical and poetic nature.
