Jiří Gruša’s Czechia: Instructions for Use. The Spaces of Post-National Writing
Abstract:
Jiří Gruša’s Czechia: Instructions for Use (1999 in German, 2001 in Czech) presents a particular case of “thirdspace”, defined by the “trialectic of spatiality – historicity – sociability” (Edward Soja), and written as a fictional guide to Czechia. The article argues that Gruša, like Soja, thinks of space not only as objectively given and linked to national ideologies, but also as the open space of social action. The challenge of space is most strikingly manifested in Gruša’s creative philology, especially in his deconstruction of local toponyms, in which the Celtic substrates appear as a common denominator in Czech and German, and in his cultural translations from Czech into German or vice versa (see also his model sketches of translators like Milena Jesenská). The emphasis on the specific lived space and the involvement of the model author and reader in Czechia: Instructions for Use also shapes the particularity of the work in comparison to other post-national narratives. The relative fragility of Gruša’s “Third Space” as its characteristic quality (Homi K. Bhabha) is illustrated in the article on the one hand by an analysis of the genesis and transformations of the work (which was soon expanded and translated into Czech), and on the other hand by analyses of literary works that continued Gruša’s discourse in both Czech and German.
