The Façade by Libuše Moníková, or Hybrid Terms as a Means of Expressing Identity
Abstract:
The works by authors of Czech origin writing in German are characterized, among other things, by their creative conceptualizations and hybridization of language and text. Unusual replications of Czech patterns in German indicate the Czech origin of those for whom German has become their literary language. Libuše Moníková is no exception to this rule, and she considers the German literary language a form of emotional detachment from the events she describes. The above-mentioned hybridization of literary language and text in her works serves an irreplaceable function, in particular with the aim of pointing to the Czech-German context of the work, specifically, to the author’s Czech origin. Her novel The Façade (1987), through its complexity, refers to these facts on more than one level at once. By analysing this novel, this contribution also reveals other areas where the Czech language and the German language influence each other and create Czech-German hybrid interreferences, characteristic especially for the literature of migration and intercultural literature.
