Word Art, or a Collection of Examples with a Short Treatise on Style

By order of the court commission of 1816, grammar school students in Czech-speaking or linguistically diverse areas were to be provided with instruction in their mother tongue. Jungmann was therefore invited to compile a collection of Czech literary texts, which he supplemented with an explanation of style. In the second edition, he publicly formulated his national and linguistic programme: “We will remain a Czech nation as long as we maintain the accuracy and purity of the Czech language.”
