Manuscript of Bernard Bolzano’s exhortation The Boundaries of Charity

One of Bolzano’s duties at the University of Prague was to deliver special sermons known as exhortations on all Sundays and festivals at the Church of the Holy Saviour. These edifying speeches were attended not only by students but also by the general public. During his tenure, Bolzano gave almost one thousand of these sermons as a “university catechist”. The themes were multifarious and ranged from religious and philosophical considerations to various ethical problems (the value of friendship, courage, the dignity of the female sex, the importance of a happy mind, an upright lifestyle, etc.).
