Conference on Periodic Memory

International professional conference Periodic Memory, Jindřichův Hradec 20 - 21 October 2021, organized by the Museum of Jindřichův Hradec, the National Museum Library and the PNP Methodical Centre. In addition to the 76 conference participants, 30 participants registered online.

Colleagues from Slovakia attended the conference online. Various types of 19th century newspapers and magazines (Jindřichův Hradec, Písek, Strakonice, Soběslav, Vysoké Mýto, etc.) with different ambitions of their founders and creators were presented at the conference forum. The content structure of periodicals at the end of the 19th century emphasised social issues and political topics. We were able to observe the relationship between the periphery and the centre and the influence of supra-regional personalities on the profile of periodicals, as well as the economic background of publishers. If we are referring to the 1890s, when the social and political differentiation of society took a leap, and when various schools of thought and political trends emerged, we can observe a tendency to trivialise the content on the one hand and to intellectualise Czech journalism on the other. (In the case of East Bohemia, we have the magazine Rozhledy, published from 1892 in Chrudim, where the fundamental Manifesto of Czech Modernism was published in the mid-90s.). From description to content analysis, some conference papers can be characterised in this way (e.g. Electric Railways in Olomouc from the perspective of the Czech and German periodicals).

In the session on restoration and conservation, the conceptualization of the issue and practical procedures for the conservation of 19th century prints were presented. The perspective of the authenticity of the document is decisive for the concept of restoration, which influences further procedures of conservation or restoration of the object.  The methods of researching the work have been continuously improved, and science has gradually entered the restoration process. There is a widening gap between scientific methods and the world, and often cannot be put into practice.

2017

Colloquium for the XVth Triennial of Czech Ex Libris 2017

The platform for meetings of the professional community and visual artists will be aimed at the discussion about the future direction of the artistic genre of ex libris, originally associated with book culture, later mainly with free graphics. The expert colloquium, which forms part of the accompanying programmes for the 15th anniversary edition of the Triennial of Czech Ex Libris Chrudim 2017, opens up space for group discussion on the issue of future triennial shows, given the ever decreasing number of participants in the national show, sponsors or interested members of the general public. Representatives of museum institutions and libraries, art educators, collectors and artists will also have the opportunity to comment on other issues raised on the topic of ex libris arising from their professional focus:
Is ex libris currently still viable and lucrative for artists of all generations in terms of artistic expression, the use of classical or new graphic techniques and the number of commissions from clients? Does ex libris as a collector's item have the potential to appeal to future generations? What is the interest in the creation of ex libris in art schools? What is the purpose of holding other triennial shows? Aren't ex libris shows a dead discipline artificially kept alive? What are the experiences of collection institutions with the issue of ex libris? Is there an interest in ex libris from researchers as a discipline (collections of historical ex libris)?

Caring for modern library collections

On October 10, 2017, the Central Depository of the National Library of the Czech Republic will host a conference focused on the care of modern library collections, where the results of the five-year NAKI project entitled „ Research, conservation and maintenance of modern library collections - materials and technologies “both theoretical knowledge and practical demonstrations of processes, technologies and materials will be presented. As it turns out in practice, modern library collections (collections created after 1800 in the National Library of the Czech Republic, in other libraries the threshold is different) are a huge group of written heritage that needs to be protected and attention needs to be paid to these collections. The huge amount of these funds and the lower material quality prove to be problematic. Colleagues from the Technical University of Liberec, Faculty of Textiles, Department of Materials Engineering are involved in the development of new materials and technologies as co-investigators of the NAKI project.

Literary Memory in Central Bohemia

An international colloquium organized by the Czech Matice, a section of the National Museum Society, in collaboration with the National Museum, the Institute for Czech Literature of the CAS, the Memorial of National Literature - Methodical Centre for Book Culture and Literary Museums, the Scientific Library of Central Bohemia in Kladno and the Central Bohemia Region.

The colloquium offers a platform for public administration and cultural institutions, researchers and other those interested in the literary history of Central Bohemia to discuss the following topics:

  • concepts of literary memory and heritage institutions
  • Care for the literary tradition of Central Bohemia yesterday and today (state and cultural institutions, science, private initiatives) and its connections
  • personalities and places of literary memory in Central Bohemia and their function in the national and regional context
  • Personalities and places of literary memory in Central Bohemia in a transnational perspective
  • new media and the memory of literature

The aim of the colloquium is to connect the perspectives of contemporary research and museology and regional care for literary memory at the level of institutions and individuals, and to discuss outstanding achievements in the field, the possibilities of their further support, as well as the problems that complicate the maintenance of literary memory in Central Bohemia. In particular, it should critically draw attention to the rather conventional, limitedly effective support of literary memory in Central Bohemia in a transnational perspective, and present possible new ways of solving specific phenomena.
